Azerbaijan, a major oil producer, will host the UN climate change conference COP29 in 2024, the chairman of COP28, taking place in Dubai, has officially announced.
“The COP28 Chair congratulates Azerbaijan for being selected to host COP29 next year. We look forward to working together to further advance climate action, ensuring we keep 1.5°C within reach and leave no one behind,” said the COP28 President responsible for the United Arab Emirates.
Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev announced on Saturday that “there is a consensus” to host COP29 in Azerbaijan after rival Armenia withdrew its candidacy.
With this choice, the UN climate summit will be held for the third year in a row in an oil or gas producing country. Oil and gas, along with coal, are the main causes of global warming.
Climate summits aim to combat global warming and keep temperatures from rising above 2°C, or preferably below 1.5°C, above pre-industrial times.
