At least one person, a 70-year-old woman, has died as torrential rains have hit Luanda since early Monday morning, leaving houses flooded, trees toppled and streets flooded and impassable.
The preliminary balance of the rains was conveyed this Monday to Lusa by the representative of the Civil Protection and Fire Safety Service, Chief Inspector Denise Panzo, reporting that the municipality of Viana, one of the most populous in Luanda, suffered the most from the hurricane.
“Some streets are still flooded, others are impassable, mostly secondary and tertiary streets are impassable, we also have reports of the Zango (Viana) expressway/direction and one of the most critical municipalities is Viana,” the spokesman said.
According to the person in charge, the Provincial Civil Protection Commission continues to study the effects of the rains and respond to the most critical areas, as well as investigate reports of possible flood victims.
“We are taking steps to determine whether the death of this 70-year-old woman is true,” he explained.
In addition to Viana, the municipality of Kilamba-Kiaxi was also on the list of the hardest hit, especially in the inner areas of neighborhoods with flooded and impassable streets.
Luanda, the capital of Angola, has seen heavy rain in recent weeks and the same phenomenon was recorded early on Monday when downpours lasted for more than six hours.
The National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics of Angola (Inamet) warns of the occurrence of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in the provinces of Bengo, Norte Kwanza, Sur Quanza and Luanda until 13:00 local time this Tuesday, December 12th.
In a statement, the meteorological office said Northern Kwanza province will record the highest rainfall and has therefore issued an orange alert for the location.
Benguela province is also on a yellow alert due to forecasts of severe weather with heavy rain and storms until Tuesday.
The warning scale goes from green (no warning) to yellow (be alert), orange (be prepared) and red (danger, take action).
