The couple, aged 20 and 21, were seriously injured in a head-on collision between a car and a truck on the IC2 highway in Pombal.
The accident occurred early this Saturday in the middle of the Tinto Straight, on IC2, in Pombal, where there are three lanes, one in the direction of Condeixa a Nova – Pombal, in which a passenger car will follow, and two in the opposite direction, in which a truck was approaching.
A truck with a refrigerated container was traveling without any cargo. As a result of the collision, debris was scattered several meters along the road, and vehicles were left off the road in opposite places on each side.
The front axle of a heavy vehicle was torn out of the tractor cab.
The driver of the car, a 20-year-old man, was “imprisoned with several bruises and suspected various injuries,” said Paulo Albano, commander of the Pombal volunteer firefighters who coordinated relief operations.
“The 21-year-old girl stabilized and left the scene with a suspected traumatic brain injury of the TBI type. Despite the severity of the injuries, both victims were always conscious and oriented,” said the person responsible for the rescue.
The alarm about the incident was received at 00:26.
“During the relief operation and then the evacuation of vehicles and clearing of the road, the road was closed in both directions until four o’clock in the morning,” said a source at the GNA command in Leiria, which is investigating the cause of the accident.
In addition to the GNR and Pombal volunteer firefighters, INEM crews totaling 10 vehicles with 26 operational personnel were also present.
