The National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernik) in the town of Pemba in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province detained two people in possession of 16 shark fins, an official said.
Both men were caught red-handed when authorities intercepted the car carrying the flippers at a checkpoint on the Lurio River in the district of Curé, Sernica spokesman Noemia João told the media at a press conference in Pemba: the provincial capital of Cabo Delgado.
The goods currently seized were shipped from Mocimboa da Praia in the north of Cabo Delgado towards Nacala in the province of Nampula.
“These are two types of crimes: illegal exploitation of natural resources and illegal exploitation of fauna resources,” added Noemia João.
Last week in Pemba, authorities seized 600 kilograms of sea cucumbers (also known as sea cucumbers) and also detained two people suspected of involvement in the case, including a government employee from the district’s economic affairs office.
