Tom Lockyer, Wales centre-back and Luton captain, collapsed on the pitch shortly after Bournemouth’s goal and the visitors’ triple substitution during an English league game this Saturday.
The club’s statement clarifies that the player “suffered cardiac arrest on the field, but was already healthy when he was carried out on a stretcher.” Tom Lockyer “got further treatment at the stadium” and “was transferred to the hospital.”
In the 59th minute, as soon as the game resumed, the athlete fell on the field, while players from both teams attracted the attention of the refereeing team, who immediately suspended the match, allowing emergency medical crews to pass.
Both teams immediately began to panic as the players put their hands on their heads and Luton Tuon manager Rob Edwards ran onto the pitch and asked both teams to form a wall to make room for Tom Lockyer. Panic was also visible in the stands: several fans drew attention to the position of the athlete, who remained indifferent on the field.
In a short post on social media, Luton Town informed their fans that the game had been suspended due to the loss of their team captain.
