The president of the government of the Spanish region of Catalonia, Pere Aragones, said this Thursday that there is now a “historic opportunity” to hold a referendum on the independence of Catalonia, agreed with the Spanish executive.
“The Spanish state must seize this historic opportunity to provide a democratic solution that allows citizens to decide the future, as the UK did with Scotland or Canada with Quebec,” Aragonés defended in an article entitled “Independence of Catalonia: a transparent agreement should establish the foundations and conditions for organization of the referendum”, published this Thursday on the portal of the French newspaper Le Monde, coinciding with the annual summit between Spain and France in Barcelona.
Pere Aragonés defended that the Spanish government “should open this new phase to find a solution on the political side, a democratic advance within the European framework”, and added that “not to do so or to delay it would be a grave mistake”.
