The European Union must do more to ensure it doesn’t miss its 2030 environmental targets.

The European Union (EU) may fail to meet most of its environmental targets by 2030, especially efforts to reduce climate pressures related to production and consumption, the European Environment Agency said this Monday.

According to a report published by the agency this Monday, the 27 member states will be able to achieve other goals, albeit smaller ones.

“For example, it is likely that the percentage of the green economy in the overall economy [europeia] continues to rise and that premature deaths associated with exposure to fine particles are falling in line with the action plan to stop pollution,” the European Environment Agency added.

In a statement accompanying the report’s release, the agency’s chief executive Leena Ylä-Mononen called on all European countries to “urgently step up action to achieve Europe’s green and climate ambitions” by the end of this decade.

The report notes that the EU has “great ambitions” to achieve the climate goals it has proposed and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen insisted on at the United Nations climate summit in Dubai.

However, for some goals, the pace “needs to be increased two to nine times” to achieve expected targets.

“Overall, stricter enforcement of legislation by member states is urgently needed, with progressive policies and measures where necessary and their consolidation,” the European Environment Agency added.
