A 78-year-old woman died on Tuesday after falling into the fireplace of the house where she lived in the village of Castanheiro, in Braganca. The alarm came in around 12:30 p.m.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, the victim was already dead.
“At 12:29 p.m., we were alerted to a cardiopulmonary arrest. When we arrived on scene, we found a victim who had fallen into the fireplace,” explained fire commander Carlos Martins, adding that the woman’s body was more than 50% burned. . .
Authorities have been called and are investigating the cause of the incident. An autopsy will determine the cause of death—whether it was from burns or another cause that preceded the fall.
Psychosocial support was called from the municipality to assist the elderly woman’s family.
