Ukraine said Tuesday it destroyed the Russian ship Novocherkassk in an attack on Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula, annexed by Russia in 2014. This attack was also confirmed by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
The commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, Lieutenant General Nikolai Oleshchuk, said that the Russian fleet was “getting smaller” and thanked the Air Force pilots and everyone who participated in the operation.
The Ukrainian Air Force indicated that the attack occurred when tactical aircraft “struck with cruise missiles the large landing ship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet Novocherkassk in the area of Feodosia” in eastern Crimea.
“The result is visible!” he emphasized.
Images posted on Telegram showed a large fire at the port.
In a statement, the Southern Defense of Ukraine explained that Novocherkassk is a ship built for the USSR by socialist Poland in the period from 1975 to 1991.
The first attempt to attack a Russian landing ship occurred on March 24, 2022 in the port of the occupied city of Berdyansk.
“Today the ship sank,” the Ukrainian Defense Forces also noted on Telegram.
The Russian Defense Ministry said the ship was hit at a base in the city of Feodosia by a guided missile fired from aircraft.
The Russian ministry objected, pointing out that two Ukrainian fighter jets were destroyed by anti-aircraft fire during the attack.
There are no reports of the severity of the damage to the ship, but video shows a large fire in the port area.
