Five people from the same family drowned in a well on Sunday evening in Magoe district, Tete province, central Mozambique, a police spokesman told Lusa on Tuesday.
The incident occurred around 20:00 (18:00 Lisbon time) on the 24th, when a 51-year-old man, the head of a family, drowned in a makeshift well while trying to clean it, said Feliciano da Camara, a police spokesman. Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Tete.
According to police, the man went into the well, believing that there was little water, but “the conditions were unfavorable, there was a lot of water,” which led to drowning.
When they noticed the 51-year-old man’s silence, four other family members went to the well to try to save him and he too drowned, police said.
The five victims, aged between 16 and 51, included a father, two sons, a grandson and a son-in-law, Feliciano da Camara added.
According to PRM, the well was two meters deep and one meter wide.
