Singapore leader condemns fake videos promoting cryptocurrencies

This Friday, Singapore’s head of government condemned the spread of fake videos that use artificial intelligence (AI) technology to trick Lee Hsien Loong into promoting supposed cryptocurrency investment platforms.

“It’s the season of hoaxes! Recently, several ultra-fake “deepfake” videos and audio recordings have surfaced. [de grande sofisticação] that I am pretending to promote cryptocurrency schemes,” the Prime Minister condemned on the social network Facebook.

“Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has also been the target of these scams that use artificial intelligence technology to copy our voices and images, turning real content obtained from official events into completely fake but very convincing videos, pretending that we are saying things.” what we never say.” said,” Lee added.

The leader of the Asian city-state attached one of the videos to the commentary, which is based on an interview given in March to CGTN, the international channel of Chinese state television CCTV.

The video echoes Lee’s voice, which appears to say: “Algorithms using quantum mechanics technology analyze market trends, make strategic investment decisions (…). It is essentially passive cryptocurrency trading with an impressively high success rate.”

According to Singaporean TV channel News Asia, the video claims that the alleged investment platform is authorized by the country’s authorities and contains a link to potential users.

Lawrence Wong also reported on December 11 a fake video in which he allegedly advertised investment products. “There is deepfake content in which I support commercial products,” the Deputy Prime Minister complained.

In early December, 49-year-old Wong announced that Singapore, one of the main innovation centers in the Asia-Pacific region, wants to triple the number of artificial intelligence specialists to 15,000.

At the time, the finance minister also said Singapore wants to benefit from AI for “the common good, while mitigating the impact on other jobs, as well as the risks associated with fraud, deepfakes, cyber-attacks and disinformation.”

In November, 71-year-old Lee Hsien Loong said he would hand over leadership of the People’s Action Party (PAP) to Wong ahead of the next elections, expected to be held before November 2025.

The PAP has ruled the city-state since Malaysia’s independence in 1965.
