The UN Security Council approved this Friday a resolution asking Secretary-General António Guterres to appoint a special envoy for Afghanistan with extensive experience in human rights and gender issues.
The UN’s top governing body approved this Friday by 13 votes in favor (with Russia and China abstaining) a resolution proposed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Japan after contentious negotiations that resulted in several drafts.
The resolution calls for the appointment of a special envoy for Afghanistan to advance the recommendations of the independent report, including addressing the basic needs of Afghans and making political commitments to reintegrate the country into the international community.
