Cape Verde’s Independent Health Regulatory Authority (ERIS) said it seized 14,865 medicines and 1,225 cosmetic products during inspections carried out in 2023.
The ERIS statement explained that in 2023, inspection activities were carried out at 68 pharmaceutical sector establishments throughout the country, classified as pharmacies, drug manufacturers, drug distributors and general commercial establishments.
The inspection activities were aimed at verifying compliance with legal requirements applicable to the pharmaceutical sector, in particular to medicinal products for human use.
“As a result of inspections carried out at general trading enterprises, 14,865 units of medicines for medical use were seized in eight of the inspected enterprises as part of measures to combat the illegal market,” the statement said.
In eight pharmaceutical sector enterprises classified as importers and distributors of cosmetic products, the organization also seized 1,225 units of cosmetic products containing prohibited ingredients.
“Also, during the verification activities, samples were taken for laboratory confirmation of the quality of cosmetic products together with a similar organization,” he explained.
In December, the Independent Health Regulator launched a computer system to help ensure that all cosmetic products entering the country are safe for public health.
A computer system for operator communication and regularization of cosmetic products ensured that “only safe products that meet national and international standards” enter the Cape Verdean market.
ERIS was created in 2019 after the closure of the Agency for the Regulation and Supervision of Pharmaceutical and Food Products, the General Directorate of Pharmaceuticals and the General Inspectorate of Health.
