French President Emmanuel Macron this Tuesday appointed 34-year-old Education Minister Gabriel Attal as the new Prime Minister of France.
Gabriel Attal, 34, is France’s youngest post-war prime minister, a record previously held by Laurent Fabius, who was 37 when he was appointed prime minister in 1984.
Gabriel Attal was France’s first openly gay prime minister. In accordance with ReutersGabriel’s sexuality was revealed by an old school friend in 2018. At the time, he was in a relationship with Macron’s former political adviser.
The new Prime Minister of France joined the Socialist Party at the age of 17. He became a household name in French politics after he was appointed government spokesman during the Covid-19 pandemic. He was later appointed as a junior minister in the Ministry of Finance and in 2023 as education minister.
Gabriel Attal’s first action after his appointment as education minister was to ban the abaya in public schools, which brought him increased popularity among many conservative voters.
