Members of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which ranks second in German polls, took part in a rally over the expulsion of foreigners from the country, an investigative report found this Wednesday.
According to journalists from the German investigative group Correctiv, reported by major German media, the meeting, organized by “influential figures” of the far right, took place last November in Potsdam, near Berlin.
At the center of the event, according to a number of sources cited by journalists, was the Austrian politician Martin Zellner, who allegedly presented a plan to achieve what some extremist groups call “remigration,” that is, the removal of millions of “foreign elements.” .
According to the investigation, Sellner outlined a scenario in which the AfD, as part of the government, would be able to legislate measures to put pressure on the foreign-born population to leave the country.
The researchers also report that Sellner also mentioned the possibility of sending “up to two million people into North African territory” in cooperation with a third state in the region, which was not disclosed.
Although the AfD does not officially advocate the expulsion of people living legally in Germany or the German population with foreign roots, AfD politicians present at the Potsdam meeting expressed approval for the plans being discussed, according to witnesses.
Among the participants were MP Gerrit Hai, head of the regional parliamentary group Saxony-Anhalt, Ulrich Siegmund and Roland Hartwig, personal assistant to party leader Alice Weidel.
According to Correctiv’s investigation, these revelations could contribute to the ongoing debate in Germany about the hypothetical legalization of the AfD, since the ideas being discussed go beyond the scope of the Constitution.
