Mozambique’s Ministry of Health recommended this Wednesday to strengthen preventive measures against influenza syndrome in the country, warning of a trend towards an increase in the number of positive cases.
In its statement, the ministry recommends “strengthening influenza prevention measures, namely cough etiquette, increased personal and community hygiene, disinfection or regular hand washing, and the use of masks for persons with acute respiratory symptoms.”
According to the same source, in Mozambique the positivity rate for the influenza virus, one of the causes of acute respiratory infections, has been on an upward trend since late December, rising from 12% to 20% in the last two weeks. although clinical data are not yet available, alarming numbers are being reported in healthcare settings.
“The above positivity rates are within expected values for this time of year,” says Misau, who is implementing an influenza syndrome surveillance system to monitor epidemiological trends, seasonality and the circulation of pathogenic virus variants.
“In Mozambique, infections caused by these viruses occur throughout the year, and the number of cases increases from January to April with a peak in March and from June to September with a peak in August,” the ministry points out.
