Former Supreme Court judge to become Brazil’s new justice minister

Former President of the Federal Supreme Court STF Ricardo Lewandowski is due to be announced this Thursday or at the latest this Friday as the new Minister of Justice and Public Security of Brazil. Sources connected to Lula da Silva said the former judge, who left the court last April after reaching the age limit of 75, accepted the president’s invitation.

After an almost two-hour meeting this Wednesday at the Palácio da Alvorada, the official residence of the Brazilian President in Brasilia, Lewandowski and Lula are planning another meeting this Thursday, at 11:00 local time and 14:00 in Lisbon, this time in Palacio do. Planalto, the seat of government, after which a formal announcement of the appointment may be made, although this is not yet guaranteed. Lewandowski wants a formal announcement to occur only after at least the main names have been chosen to succeed him at the Justice Department, which could delay confirmation of the appointment by a day or two.

If the appointment is confirmed, which palace sources thought was certain on Thursday, Ricardo Lewandowski will replace the exact person to fill the vacancy he left open on the Supreme Court as justice and public security minister. Appointed in November by Lula da Silva as an STF judge, Justice Minister Flavio Dino was confirmed in Lewandowski’s post by the Senate last December and is due to take up his post at the STF on February 22, a few days after that. the court returns after recess at the beginning of the year.

Appointed to the Supreme Court by Lula in 2006, Ricardo Lewandowski served on the court for 17 years and has always had a distinctly progressive streak, causing serious clashes with his more conservative colleagues on the court.
