Mozambican Health Minister Armindo Thiago warned this Thursday that the number of flu cases in the country will increase, reinforcing the call for prevention given the increase in the number of positive cases.
“Between January and March, this country experiences a cyclical increase in the incidence of influenza. Despite the increase in positive cases, we have not yet begun to see an increase in the number of influenza cases in our healthcare facilities. However, since the peak is yet to come, this increase is yet to come,” said Armindo Tiago, speaking to the media after delivering medicines to Maputo’s central hospital.
At stake is the influenza syndrome in a country where the positivity rate for the influenza virus, one of the causes of acute respiratory infections, has been trending upward since late December, rising from 12% to 20% in the past two weeks. , although clinical data has yet to report alarming numbers in healthcare settings.
The ministry recommends “strengthening influenza prevention measures, namely cough etiquette, increased personal and collective hygiene, disinfection or regular hand washing, and the use of masks by persons with acute respiratory symptoms.”
“The above positivity rates are within the range expected for this time of year,” says the ministry, which is implementing a surveillance system for influenza syndrome to monitor epidemiological trends, seasonality and the circulation of virus variants that cause it.
