Former US President Donald Trump returned to court this Thursday for the final phase of his financial fraud trial in New York, where he reiterated that the trial is a case of “election interference.”
Because the judge barred Trump from intervening in closing arguments, Trump still had a brief opportunity to speak in court at the end of the trial, calling the trial a “fraud” before the judge cut him off.
“We have a situation in which I am an innocent person, (…) I am being persecuted by a person running for office [de Presidente] and I believe that it is necessary to go beyond,” said former President Leading Judge Arthur Engoron adjourned for lunch.
Trump is accused, along with his sons Eric and Donald Jr., of inflating the value of the Trump Organization’s skyscrapers, luxury hotels and golf courses in the 2010s to obtain better bank loans and better insurance terms.
New York State Attorney General Letitia James, who filed the case in the fall of 2022, citing financial fraud, is demanding a fine of $370 million (almost 350 million euros) as compensation.
