The Central Region Teachers’ Union (SPRC) this Friday felt that the death of a Seiya Secondary School student on Thursday “shows negligence on the part of political leaders in the field of education.”
“It seems clear that, if there had not been a better opinion, the characteristics of the door that was involved in this accident would have been fatal, which should have already caused its replacement,” the union structure emphasized this Friday in a statement sent to the Agency Lusa.
A 16-year-old girl died on Thursday afternoon from serious injuries after colliding with a glass door at the Escola Secundária de Seia school in the Guarda district.
According to the SPRC, “consecutive delays in the restoration of schools” led to the “irreparable situation” of the student’s death.
At the same time, the leadership of the trade union structure asks “how many similar conditions exist throughout the country”, such as those that led to the death of the young woman in Seiya.
The SPRC adds that “it is also symptomatic of the negligence in relation to school construction that the listing, classification and processes for the use of Recovery and Resilience Plan funds now allocated for this purpose.”
The trade union organization believes that “the ten-year period is also a demonstration of how these issues are being resolved.”
The union warned of the “delay and inadequacy of this measure in a country where the school system cannot wait ten years” and criticized the fact that only 7.8% of schools were considered to have intervention as very urgent.
“However, other accidents may arise, repeating the misfortune of the young woman who yesterday, when she went to school, took with her dreams that she will never be able to fulfill,” the trade union structure emphasized in a statement.
According to Seia Volunteer Fire Department Second Chief Marco Teixeira, the alarm was received around 1:48 p.m., and upon arrival, prehospital crews found the student lying on the floor in cardiac arrest and injuries. severe pain in the chest area.
Other relief assets were also deployed at the scene, such as an SIV (immediate life support) ambulance from Seiya and an INEM helicopter that landed on the school grounds.
Marco Teixeira explained that the victim was eventually taken by ambulance to Seia Hospital as part of complex life support maneuvers supported by the INEM helicopter team, but the situation could not be turned around.
The funeral of the 16-year-old student, according to the funeral home, will take place on Sunday at 15:00, from the Church of Nossa Señora de Fatima in Vila Verde to the cemetery at this address in the municipality of Seia.
