André Ventura was re-elected as President of Chega this Saturday with 98.9% of the votes at the party’s sixth National Congress, which takes place in Viana do Castelo.
The statement was made by the chairman of the board of the main assembly, Jorge Galvejas, according to which Andre Ventura, the only candidate, received 98.9% of the votes, while 1% of empty votes and 0.1% of zero votes were also recorded. .
“So we have a president-elect, Dr. Andre Ventura,” he said, not mentioning the number of votes, only percentages.
Following the announcement, Delgado received a standing ovation and chants of “Ventura, Ventura” as they entered the room shortly after.
Andre Ventura was elected to a three-year term, which can be extended according to the party’s 2019 constitution.
At the last meeting of the party’s highest body a year ago, it received 98.3% of the votes.
Voting took place by secret ballot. The polls opened at 3:15 p.m. and delegates voted throughout the day. After a pause in the counting of votes, the results were announced from the stage.
After greeting some supporters as he walked through the hall, Ventura walked up to the convention stage, always waving, and hugged Council members.
Then there was a chant: “It doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter whether they say good or bad, we want Andre Ventura to rule Portugal.”
Ventura then went to retrieve the national flag, which he displayed as those in attendance shouted “Portugal, Portugal”, and sat down where he had been watching, at a table at the top of the stage.
The leader of Chegi since its official registration in 2019, a former activist and leader of the SDP, has always achieved stunning victories, around 90%.
He first put his candidacy up for voting at the party’s founding congress in June 2019 and received 94% of the vote.
In April 2020, he resigned from his position, having been re-elected in direct elections in September of that year with a result of 99.1%.
On March 6, 2021, the party re-elected Ventura in new elections with 97.3% of the vote, following his resignation in the January 24 presidential election, in which he was the third most voted, failing to achieve his goals. ahead of former PS MEP Ana Gomes and forcing head of state Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa into the second round.
Andre Ventura only challenged in direct elections in November 2021. In these direct elections, he received 94.78% of the votes, while his opponent, businessman Carlos Natal, received 5.22%.
In 2023, he was elected again at the congress, as provided for by the 2019 statute, which Chega decided to re-enact after the Constitutional Court rejected the latest laws.
Chega’s sixth national convention began on Friday and will last until Sunday at the Viana do Castelo cultural center.
