Teachers and the Ministry of Education still cannot agree on the teachers’ statements after two meetings last week. So the return to normal public education continues with no set date, with strikes continuing until at least February.
But what reforms are teachers fighting for? And what suggestions did the ministry make?
What do teachers want?
Since December 9, teachers have been fighting for their rights and for the rights of teaching. These demands on the part of the teaching staff are mainly based on career development, career recovery, hiring and placement of teachers, and reduction of working hours.
That is, teachers demand a reduction in the number of teachers left at the 4th and 6th career levels, and, consequently, a proper restoration of seniority, taking into account the career freeze. Teachers are also asked to review the recruitment and placement model for teachers, as well as reduce working hours and assign tasks consistent with 35 hours per week.
Proposal of the Ministry of Education
Taking into account the requirements of the field of public education, the Ministry of Education intends to recruit 10,000 teachers for the 2023/2024 academic year and, in turn, reduce the distance between the residences and the schools in which they are located.
The government is also suggesting that teachers run for schools in 2024, and that vacancies where there are shortages of teachers open only after that. There is still a pay raise on the table for teachers who cannot join the ranks.
