The commander-general of the GPR received professional associations of security forces because of the protests

The General Commander of the National Republican Guard (NRG) is hosting the professional associations of the security forces this Monday, amid a wave of protests by police officers and security guards demanding better pay and working conditions.

The meeting, scheduled for 15:00 at the PNP General Command in Lisbon, was convened by Rui Ribeiro Veloso on Thursday, the day the national director of the PNP met with the police unions, to which he expressed solidarity with the protests. .

Ribeiro Veloso also expressed support on Thursday for the protests by security forces, but asked the corporation’s military personnel to ensure that “under no circumstances is the freedom and security” of citizens neglected.

In a message sent to the Republican National Guard, Rui Ribeiro Veloso expressed confidence in the possibility of “finding a fair and balanced solution that meets the legitimate expectations of the Guard soldiers.”

The GNR military, along with the PSP police, are holding protests in several cities across the country demanding better wages and working conditions. This initiative began with a PSP agent in front of the Assembly of the Republic in Lisbon and continues to this day. mobilize more and more elements of the PSP, as well as the GNR and prison guards.

The protest by members of the PSP and the GNR armed forces began after the government on November 29 approved the payment of a PJ career allowance, which has no equivalent in other security forces and, in some cases, could represent an increase of almost €700 per month.

These protests arose spontaneously and were not organized by any trade union, despite the existence of a platform consisting of seven PSP unions and four National Republican Guard associations created to demand a review of salary allowances for the security forces.

On Friday, after a meeting with Interior Minister José Luis Carneiro, the platform said all political parties must take a “firm and clear position” on police rights ahead of legislative elections.

On the same day, the Minister of Internal Affairs recalled that the government was “entering a management phase and is unable” to respond to police demands, leaving the decision to a future government.

Police protests are organized through social networks such as Facebook and Telegram.
