At least eleven poachers have been arrested in Luanda for killing animal species, some of which are critically endangered, namely pangolins, sea turtles, deer, wild boar and monkeys, the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) said on Tuesday.
According to Fernando Carvalho, head of the public relations and press department of SIC-Luanda, the suspects carried out the secret slaughter of the above-mentioned animals intended for sale in the municipalities of Quisama, Belas and Quilamba-Khiaxi.
Citizens accused of committing the crime of environmental aggression were detained at the crime scene while storing already slaughtered and not yet slaughtered animals, explained a representative of the Investigative Committee.
The SIC initially detained four nationals accused of killing two sea turtles, while two others were also rescued and returned to their habitat.
The rest of the hunters were found with meat from dead animals, namely 16 bambi (wild goats), nine deer, a boar’s head, 15 monkeys, two cambuiges (large rodents), four deer heads, two pangolins and a pig.
Remote traps and firearms were used to kill the animals.
