Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that Sweden would no longer count on his country’s support in its bid for NATO membership after Stockholm authorized an anti-Turkish demonstration on Saturday.
“Sweden cannot count on our support [na adesão] in NATO. If you do not respect the religious beliefs of the Republic of Turkey or Muslims, you will not receive any support from us,” assured the Turkish President, who put forward a number of conditions for approving the entry of Sweden and Finland into the Atlantic Alliance, including measures against Kurdish movements created in these Scandinavian countries.
On Friday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry summoned the Swedish ambassador to Ankara to protest the authorization of a planned demonstration in Stockholm by an extremist group to burn the Koran in front of the Turkish embassy in the Swedish capital. .
