The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has rejected an appeal by former Vice-President of the European Parliament (EP) Eva Kylie, a central figure in the Qatargate scandal, to overturn the lifting of parliamentary immunity.
“In its ruling, the General Court rejects the appeal filed by Eva Kylie, considering it completely inadmissible, since the actions in question cannot be challenged. The request for a waiver of immunity is a preliminary and necessary measure to guarantee the effectiveness of investigations when the immunity that a person benefits from is an obstacle to the investigation against him/her,” the CJEU said in a statement.
The former Greek MEP demanded that the European Public Prosecutor’s Office’s request to waive parliamentary immunity and the decision of European Parliament President Roberta Metsola to bring the request to the plenary session be annulled.
