“I went to the cafe and said I killed my mother, but I didn’t kill her.” In a confused and incoherent speech, Fernando Almeida, 50, denied this Friday in the Braga court the crime of which he is accused: the murder of his mother, Lucinda Ribeiro, 89, in June 2022 in the house they both lived in Carvalhas, Barcelos.
A son in Braga prison accused of strangling and assaulting his mother to death justified his confession to the crime at the time because he was “haunted by voices.” This Friday, a panel of judges granted Fernando Almeida’s defense request to conduct additional mental health examinations of the defendant. The goal is to understand whether the accused can be found guilty of murder.
During Friday’s meeting, the owner of the cafe was also questioned, where the man admitted to committing the crime. José Oliveira confirmed that Fernando went into a cafe “where there were a lot of people and said: ‘The old woman is dead, I killed her, come and see’.” When representatives of the NTC arrived, according to one of the soldiers interviewed, “there were several people in the house.”
