In 2023, Médio Tejo’s health services carried out 21.3% more operations and 123 more births (+18%) compared to 2022, according to data released this Monday by the local health department (ULS Médio Tejo).

A record number of births occurred at the Abrantes maternity hospital, “despite the fact that until the beginning of June it carried out its activities in a rotating mode,” ULS emphasized.
811 children were born in the maternity ward of the Abrantes Hospital, 123 more than in 2022, an increase of 18%.

The pressure was mainly observed in the emergency department of the Abrantes Hospital, which ended the year with about 51 thousand emergency visits (2,311 more visits than in the previous year and a percentage increase of 5%), as well as in the emergency department in Torres -Novas, where there were also one thousand more visits in 2023 compared to 2022, an increase in assistance of 3%.
In the Torres Vedras Pediatric Emergency Department, the volume of care decreased by 9%, with a total of 3,251 fewer emergency episodes recorded, which ULS justified by “constraints felt from the second semester due to two maternity leaves.”
Despite a two-week closure on weekends during the first five months of the year, Abrantes Hospital’s gynecology and obstetrics emergency service treated 23% more users compared to 2022, with a global total of 4,822 emergency episodes for the year – more than 899 emergency episodes.
In 2023, there were still 1,302 patients in the wards of the three ULS Médio Tejo hospitals, for a total of 17,615 users (an increase of 8%).
