The Foreign Minister announced this Monday that Portugal will take part in a European Union (EU) mission to escort ships in the Red Sea under threat from Houthi militias, with the terms of Portugal’s participation yet to be determined.
“Portugal will support this mission […], will include an intervention capability component to protect ships at risk, and on our end, the Department of Defense will tell us what our readiness is to support. This, of course, will not be a frigate or a ship, but there will be some participation on our part,” said João Gomes Cravinho following a meeting of EU ministers responsible for diplomacy in Brussels.
Community diplomacy discussed this Monday the establishment of a mission in the Red Sea to counter attacks by Yemen’s Houthi militias on international shipping.
