Lisbon doctor and president of the Association for Economic and Social Development (SEDES) Álvaro Beleza was announced on Monday evening as “number one” on the PS list for Vila Real.
“At stake, of course, is not the person who was chosen, this is not a personal issue, this is a matter of principle. In other words, we find it unacceptable that the head of the list is imposed on us when we have more worthy people.” in the entire district, capable of playing this role,” he told the Lusa José Silva agency.
Because he does not and cannot accept this situation, the Socialist leader said that the municipality of Vila Real has not put forward a single name on the list for the March 10 elections.
“This is a matter of principle; we will in no way accept having any candidate imposed on us. Of course, we are not talking about the candidate himself. Regardless of who the candidate was, we would not have accepted this position, and what we did was to step away from the process,” he stressed.
However, he stressed that the PS as a whole is more important than the municipality of Vila Real.
“And the PS will count on us, because we are absolutely sure that the PS is the best solution for governing the country,” he emphasized.
One of the names discussed locally to top the socialist list was Vila Real Mayor Ruy Santos, who is serving his third and final term as head of the municipality of Trás os Montes.
José Silva said the mayor “has always assumed that his first commitment will be to Vila Real and the people of Vila Real,” “a commitment that he will carry out to the end.”
In a conversation with Lusa, the president of the district federation of PS Vila Real, Luis Machado, said that he does not comment on the statements of his party comrades and that the final version of the lists of parliamentary candidates for the next legislative elections will be approved. today by the National Political Commission.
In the last legislative elections, the district’s PS list was headed by Francisco Rocha, who resigned his mandate in March and joined the board of directors of Águas do Norte.
In 2022, the PS won the constituency elections with 43,489 votes (41.29%), followed by the Social Democrats in second place with 42,135 votes (40.01%) and Chega in third place with 7,573 votes (7.01%). . ).
