European Council President Charles Michel, who announced less than a month ago that he would leave office early to run as a Liberal candidate in the European elections, decided this Friday not to do so so as not to affect “European unity.” .
“I do not want this decision to distract us from our mission, to jeopardize this institution and our European project, nor to be used in an offensive way to divide the European Council, which, in my opinion, should work tirelessly in favor of a European unity. […] For all these reasons, and in order to maintain the focus of my mission, I will not stand in the European elections,” Charles Michel said in a post on his official Facebook account.
Stressing that he would apply “every effort” to his “present responsibilities with unwavering determination to the end,” the European Council President added that only at the end of his term would he reflect “on the nature and direction of future commitments.”
