André Ventura compared suspicions of corruption in Madeira to Operation Influential Man during a speech delivered this Saturday at the electoral congress in Chega. “For us there is only one criterion: to cut straight for the sake of decency,” he said.
According to Chegi, “there is no double standard” regarding the president of the regional government of Madeira and the prime minister. “Miguel Albuquerque himself said that Antonio Costa should resign. He made a caricature and the worst thing was the reaction of Luis Montenegro. [presidente do PSD]”, noted Andre Ventura.
On Wednesday, the Ministry of Justice and the National Anti-Corruption Unit of the Judicial Police carried out a major judicial operation in Madeira and on the mainland. The chairman of the regional government is suspected of corruption crimes, economic participation in entrepreneurship and malfeasance, as well as possible violation of public procurement rules.
“Other parties are concerned that we may profit from these cases. They believe that it is better to remain silent. We will not remain silent because of the integrity that Portugal must have,” President Chega emphasized.
According to Andre Ventura, in view of the “enormous rot throughout the country”, the “culture established in the two largest parties” is designed to condone cases of corruption. “The Portuguese recognize that we have not just approached the problem of corruption,” he emphasized.
On Friday, Miguel Albuquerque announced his resignation as president of the regional executive branch. The successor will be announced on Monday.
