Donald Trump ordered to pay the writer more than 76 million euros for libel

Former United States President Donald Trump has been ordered to pay more than $83 million (€76 million) to writer E. Jean Carroll for defamation.

The verdict was handed down Friday afternoon by a jury of seven men and two women in a trial regularly attended by Trump, who abruptly walked out during attorney Carroll’s closing arguments.

The author accused the politician of ruining her reputation as a credible journalist by denying that he raped her almost 30 years ago.

Carroll, 80, sued Trump in 2019 after the former president denied raping her in the 1990s.

Trump accused the writer of lying to increase sales of the memoir she published at the time. Her lawyers accused Carroll of “lusting for the protagonist.”

During his trial this Friday, Trump abruptly left the hearing in New York while the writer’s lawyer was presenting closing arguments.

Minutes after defense attorney Roberta Kaplan began arguing in Manhattan federal court, Trump suddenly stood up from his seat at the defense table and walked toward the exit, waiting a moment to allow Secret Service officials to receive him.

Defense attorney E. Jean Carroll urged jurors to decide on damages, arguing Trump destroyed her reputation by stirring up a hateful response after calling her a liar.
