Paulo Cafofo, leader of the PS Madeira, guaranteed this Monday that if the PS has a government, the Madeirans will be provided with all the stability they need. The politician says it is extremely important to hold early elections and for the President of the Republic to make clear his intention to dissolve the Regional Assembly.
“There can be no double standards. What happened at the national level must happen at the regional level,” he said.
Paulo Cafofo argues that the current chief executive should remain in power until early elections are held, since the region’s Political-Administrative Statute does not provide for the replacement of the chairman of the regional government.
“With the resignation of the current president [do Governo da Madeira] functions are terminated and all [os elementos do executivo regional] stay in control,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the PS’s candidacy for the Madeira constituency in the March 10 legislative elections.
The president of Madeira’s regional government has been named as a defendant in an investigation into allegations of corruption, abuse of power, malfeasance, attacks on the rule of law and other crimes.
The case also involves two businessmen and the mayor of Funchal, Pedro Calado, three of whom were detained during a police operation launched on January 24 in Madeira and several cities on the continent.
