The US carried out dozens of attacks on Iran-linked targets in Syria and Iraq early Saturday morning, killing at least 39 people in what it said was the “beginning of a response” to an attack that killed three US soldiers in Syria and Iraq. Jordan, last week.
The strikes, which involved long-range B-1 bombers from US bases and cruise missiles launched by US forces in the region, hit at least 85 targets in eight regions of Syria and Iraq, including command centers and logistics depots, weapons and ammunition depots and warehouses for missiles, missiles and drones. The Pentagon says the attack targeted positions of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and allied militias belonging to the Axis of Resistance.
“This is the beginning of our response. We are not looking for conflict in the Middle East or anywhere else, but we will not tolerate attacks on our forces,” said US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
Iran condemned the attacks as a “strategic mistake” by the US that would lead to further instability and tension, but did not threaten to retaliate, while Iraq said they would have “catastrophic consequences for the region.”
