The National Assembly (Parliament) of Angola will discuss and generally approve on Wednesday the proposed anti-doping law in sports, the first secretary of the legislature, Manuel Dembo, said on Monday.
According to the Angolan MP, the decision was approved this Monday at a conference of chairmen of parliamentary groups led by the President of Parliament, Carolina Cerqueira.
The proposed anti-doping law in sports, considered by the Council of Ministers on January 17, will be the only issue of Wednesday’s extraordinary plenary session and will be considered urgently.
According to authorities, the legal diploma in question was sent to parliament for discussion and approval with a view to bringing it into conformity with the Angolan Constitution and the International Code on the subject.
By approving the proposed Anti-Doping in Sports Law, the Angolan Executive intends to continue to promote the cultural and moral education of citizens, protecting the health of athletes, support personnel and other sports agents by combating the use of prohibited substances and methods.
Youth and Sports Minister Palmira Barbosa said in January following the first extraordinary session of the Council of Ministers that the current law establishing the legal regime for combating doping in sports was an “inconsistency” with the norms. The Constitution and the World Anti-Doping Code.
