This Wednesday, Portugal and Poland reaffirmed their “unequivocal support” for Ukraine, said the Portuguese Foreign Minister, who stressed that bilateral relations could improve given the “prospects opened up” by the government led by Donald Tusk.
“The two countries’ unequivocal support for Ukraine dominated the conversation, which also included the desire to deepen relations between Portugal and Poland, especially on the economic front,” the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on the social network X (formerly Twitter), regarding the meeting of Minister João Gomes Cravinho and his Polish colleagues of Radoslaw Sikorski.
On his page on the same social network, the head of Portuguese diplomacy said that “bilateral relations with Poland are good, but the prospects opened by the new government allow us to be more ambitious.”
“Ukraine, the Middle East and support for Mozambique were among the international topics discussed in this very useful dialogue,” he also said.
Gomes Cravinho met his Polish counterpart in Warsaw after a two-day visit to Ukraine together with Education Minister Joao Costa.
Donald Tusk, the former president of the European Council, took office as head of the Polish government on December 13, leading a post-election coalition of pro-European parties that ended an eight-year cycle of rule by the Law and Justice Party (PiS, a conservative nationalist).
The Russian military offensive into Ukraine, launched on February 24, 2022, has plunged Europe into its most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
