The Brazilian Federal Police confirmed this Wednesday that it is investigating whether the serious health emergency for the Yanomami indigenous people is the result of alleged inaction by the government of former President Jair Bolsonaro and whether it could constitute the crime of genocide.
The investigation is based on a complaint by the Department of Justice following the discovery of a serious health situation in Yanomami villages located in the states of Amazonas and Roraima, on the border of Brazil and Venezuela.
The complaint asks for clarification on the alleged responsibility of government officials and former President Jair Bolsonaro, who was replaced by progressive leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on January 1, in the health crisis caused by invaders on indigenous lands.
