More than eight thousand violations, 521 of which related to drunk driving, were recorded by security forces over seven days as part of the “Zero Tax on Driving” campaign, which ended on Wednesday.
A joint statement from the National Republican Guard (GNR), Public Security Police (PSP) and National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) indicated that 50,623 vehicles were inspected in person during the week, for a total of 8,269 vehicles. registered.
During the operation, which took place from February 1 to 7, 2,245 accidents were recorded, resulting in eight deaths, 36 serious injuries and 735 minor injuries.
According to them, compared to the same period in 2023, there were 400 fewer accidents, one less fatality, 12 fewer serious injuries and 21 fewer minor injuries.
The fatal accidents, all men aged between 22 and 83, occurred in the districts of Lisbon, Aveiro, Beja, Braga, Coimbra, Leiria and Setubal.
The Zero Tax while Driving campaign involved the regional administrations of the Azores and Madeira in awareness-raising activities.
This was the second of 12 information and inspection campaigns planned under the National Inspection Plan 2024 (PNF).
Until the end of the year, 10 more campaigns will be carried out, one per month, with awareness-raising and inspection activities.
Of the two events held this year, seven events were held, during which more than 850 people were personally raised.
As for verification activities, the number of drivers checked personally was about 100.1 thousand, and about 5.1 million vehicles were checked using radars.
