This Thursday, the Angolan government asked the population to strengthen prevention measures against cholera by familiarizing them with basic water treatment procedures due to the outbreak in Southern African countries.
The Angolan Health Minister recalled that Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (RDCongo), devastated by the cholera outbreak, border several Angolan provinces of Moxico, Cuando Cubango, Lunda Norte, Lunda Sud, Malanje, Uige, Zaire and Cabida.
Sylvia Lutukuta, in a statement released this Thursday, said that there is an intense movement of people and goods between Angola and the Republics of Zambia and DR Congo, warning of the risks of the disease.
Angolan Health Ministry, in a statement providing guidance on how cholera is transmitted and how to avoid it, stressed that cholera can kill within hours if left untreated and asked citizens to notify authorities if suspected.
Authorities recommend measures such as frequent hand washing, personal hygiene, treating water with bleach, boiling water and washing fruit with purified water.
In Angola, where epidemiological surveillance measures have already been strengthened, not a single case of cholera has yet been reported.
Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, both countries that share extensive land borders with Angola, are countries that have reported a cholera outbreak due to heavy rainfall in these territories; cases have also been reported in Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. .
Acting President of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and Angolan Head of State João Lourenço on Friday said coordinated and effective action was needed to stop the outbreak.
“The public health crisis affecting our region poses a serious threat to the sustainable development and well-being of our people. At this critical moment, we must recognize the urgency of our response and the need for coordinated and effective action, as cholera knows. there are no borders and a regional approach is required to solve this problem,” he said.
