A study by scientists from the Spanish High Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) that proved the effectiveness of ultrasound therapy in suppressing cancer cells in cases of pancreatic cancer was published this Wednesday.
The study, published in Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, paves the way for the development of new, non-invasive ultrasound-based therapies to stop the growth of solid tumors.
CSIC notes in its statement that the growth of solid tumors is accompanied by processes of proliferation and migration of cancer cells, adding that modern therapies, including ionizing radiation, destroy malignant and healthy cells.
“Our study opens up the possibility for the first time of developing a new therapy based solely on ultrasonic, non-ionizing technology,” which would mean a non-invasive, low-cost, easy-to-administer treatment without collateral damage to patients. , explained Itziar González, a CSIC researcher at the Leonardo Torres Quevedo Institute for Physical and Information Technology (ITEFI).
The study used “in vitro” pancreatic cancer samples by applying a dose of low-intensity ultrasound for just twenty minutes to a group of pancreatic cancer-type cells (PANC-1), which allowed the collective advancement and individual cells to be stopped for at least two days. he said.
“The application of ultrasonic waves in certain acoustic conditions for 15 or 20 minutes inhibits the ability of cells to move for long periods of time, more than 48 hours or even three days after treatment,” the scientist said.
The researchers also observed some inhibition of cell proliferation processes, which they are currently analyzing in other laboratory experiments.
The next step to demonstrate the efficacy and suitability of this therapy will be to test it in mice with different types of tumors.
These experiments will be carried out in collaboration with researchers from US Harvard Universities, the Basque Country and the Ramon y Cajal Institute for Medical Research, using a small ultrasound device that adapts to the animal.
