The Socialist Party (PS) this Wednesday filed a criminal complaint with the Attorney General’s Office against unknown people for vandalizing in the Algarve posters with offensive inscriptions, “which promote insults and incite” violence, the party said.
In a statement, the Algarve Regional Socialist Federation said its communications panel structure with election campaign materials was “totally damaged” in the region.
According to the PS, the application to initiate a criminal case is supported by evidence collected from destroyed and forged propaganda posters with inscriptions promoting “insults and calls for verbal violence.”
“(…) The network of billboards was completely damaged, with offensive messages, repeatedly and in an organized manner,” the document says.
Socialists condemn the vandalism of campaign materials, an act they classify as “a complete lack of democratic spirit on the part of those who committed this crime” against political freedom and expression.
At the same time, they reaffirm their commitment to the values of April, for which “today, like 50 years ago, they are determined to fight in defense of the Constitution of the Republic and the European project, as well as against obscurantism, isolationism and democratic regression.”
Portugal will hold early legislative elections on March 10, planned by the President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa following the resignation of Prime Minister António Costa on November 7, which was the target of an investigation carried out by the Ministry of State of the Supreme Court. Court of Justice.
The election campaign for legislative elections will take place from February 25 to March 8.
