The Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAD) overturned Farense’s punishment for two games behind closed doors for racism, with a source from the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) saying the organization would appeal.
According to the ruling to which Lusa had access, the TAD believes that “it was in fact proven […] that players Andre Clovis, Cauan Oliveira and Famana Kizera were the target of racist abuse.”
However, the TOP resolution of February 8 states that “it has not been proven that anyone from the plaintiff’s structure [Farense] heard them, had direct knowledge of them, or had effective and timely knowledge of them and were thus able to respond in a timely manner.”
According to a source in the FPF, the organization will appeal the decision of the TAD in the Central Administrative Court of the South.
On 31 January 2023, Farense was punished with two games behind closed doors and a fine of €33,470 for discriminatory behavior in the II Football League draw with Academico de Viseu on 20 August 2022.
After the match, Brazil’s Vizene player Andre Clovis said he was the target of racist abuse from Algarve fans present at the San Luis Stadium, an incident also condemned by the club he represents.
The actions towards Clovis, who scored one of his team’s goals on August 20, 2022, occurred, according to his own words, during his substitution in the 83rd minute and led to incidents after the final whistle.
“Confusion” between the Academico bench and local fans also led to the ouster of Farense president João Rodrigues.
