An accident involving a truck that hit a power pole has left part of the town of Boane on the outskirts of Maputo without power and is affecting the water supply of the Mozambican capital, officials said this Saturday.
The truck accident occurred early Friday evening in the city of more than 100,000 people and has since cut power supply in seven areas of the city, according to the Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM).
“As soon as the incident occurred, EDM technical teams were on site to ensure normal power supply was restored to the affected areas as quickly as possible. However, due to the severity of the accident, EDM must replace the damaged electrical system. equipment for new ones, which may increase the time to restore power supply,” explained a source in the state energy company.
However, a source at the Águas da Região Metropolitana de Maputo said that the same road accident that cut off power to the Umbeluzi water treatment plant is also affecting water supplies to the towns of Maputo, Matola, outside the village of Boane .
“There are restrictions on water supply to areas of the city and province of Maputo caused by the collapse of the power line supplying the Umbeluzi water treatment plant,” the company said.
He added that the consequences of this incident are reflected in “low pressure in the distribution network, which could lead to hotspots of water shortages.”
