The PSP has launched an investigation to investigate the circumstances in which the police demonstration took place near the Capitol in Lisbon this Monday.
The PSP states that the demonstration by police and GNR troops in Praça do Comércio was reported to the Lisbon City Council and took place without any incident. However, according to a statement sent to the newsroom, the parade through various arteries of the city to the Capitol area where protesters gathered was not broadcast, as required by the current legal framework.
According to the statement, this police parade, which preceded a debate between Luis Montenegro and Pedro Nuno Santos, led to the “unexpected cutting of several arteries in the city.”
“Taking into account the possible involvement of the PSP police in this unregistered action, the National Directorate has decided to open an investigation to establish the circumstances under which the parade and concentration near the Capitol took place, confirming the possible participation of the PSP police in the above-mentioned parade and concentration with a view to determining possible disciplinary action , as well as preparing a news report outlining these facts for subsequent transmission to the prosecutor’s office.”
In the same document, the PSP National Directorate explains that the demonstration at the Praça do Comércio in Lisbon was planned and communicated to the Lisbon City Council for Monday from a platform representing the various unions of the Public Security Police (PSP). and the socio-professional association of the National Republican Guard (NRG), adding that the demonstration “took place without any incident, within the law and in a civilized manner.”
“However, at a certain moment, outside the legal framework regulating the right of assembly and demonstration, a part of the protesters decided to start a parade through the various arteries of the city of Lisbon to the Capitol area, where they gathered, a parade on this occasion there was no communication with the City Council of Lisbon (CML), which led to the unexpected cutting of several arteries in the city,” PSP reported.
The Public Security Police stress that “the final location of the concentration (near the Capitol Cinema) was also not communicated to the HML, as required by the current legal framework.”
A spokesman for the platform that unites the PSP trade unions and the GNR associations said today that the spontaneous concentration near the Capitol does not call into question the legitimacy of the protests and praised the behavior of the police.
