The government is allowing further, stronger measures to ensure minimum water supplies in the Algarve after reassessing the drought situation in June. A state of disaster or, alternatively, an environmental emergency may be declared.
According to a decree of the Council of Ministers published on Tuesday in the Diário da República newspaper, the government can determine the use of water resources, surface or underground, owned by public or private organizations.
From June 1 to September 30, the use of public water for washing vehicles is suspended. The measures planned by the government also include the suspension of water supplies for irrigation of golf courses.
