The President of the Angolan National Assembly said today that citizens expect the legislature to be “more open, more transparent and able to control”, saying that “dialogue and tolerance” should guide parliamentary life in this legislature.
According to Carolina Cerqueira, the centrality of Parliament in the political system of Angola is one of the priorities of the current mandate, which requires deputies, officials and parliamentary agents of great responsibility in dealing with citizens and institutions.
Serqueira also expressed his conviction that citizens expect from their parliament “more openness, more transparency and capacity for thorough analysis.”
He emphasized that the parliament is “more accessible, a more functioning parliament, the house of democracy, which is the home of all Angolans.”
The Angolan Parliament unanimously approved today the final composition of the board of the National Assembly, which included two deputies from the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA, opposition) as the 2nd and 4th vice-presidents and two more as the 2nd and 4th th secretaries. .
For the President of the Legislature, speaking at the end of the Third Ordinary Plenary of the First Legislative Session of the Fifth Legislature, dialogue, tolerance and a sense of state “should be the values that should guide parliamentary life”. .
He noted that “this is the only way to build a more democratic society” and feel “fully represented” by the sovereign body that is the National Assembly.
“Our common desire is for Angola to be and remain the model of democracy for Africa and the world. Democracy is built on voting, tolerance and dialogue,” he said.
Carolina Cerqueira also called on deputies to defend the mandate, whose legislature runs until 2027, “so that this chamber of laws is a strong institution capable of fulfilling its tasks.”
“And build the future in accordance with the trust and strength that the people have given us with our election,” concluded the chairman of the legislature of Angola.
The next plenary session of the National Assembly is scheduled for February 13.
