PSD President Luis Montenegro said this Saturday that “Portugal will always defend the Ukrainian people uncompromisingly,” once again condemning Russia’s “unjustified invasion” two years ago.
“Two years ago, a war began in Europe against the values of freedom. The unjustified invasion of Putin’s Russia in Ukraine, which encroaches on the values of humanism. Portugal will always be in the uncompromising defense of the Ukrainian people,” Luis writes. Montenegro, in a publication on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
Prime Minister António Costa has already used the same network to declare that Portugal will support the “heroic resistance” of the Ukrainian people and armed forces for as long as necessary until a just and lasting peace is achieved.
In the same spirit, the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, assured this Saturday that Portugal will support Ukraine “as long as necessary” and condemned the “unjust, illegal and immoral war” caused by the Russian invasion.
The Russian military offensive into Ukraine, launched on February 24, 2022, has plunged Europe into its most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
Ukraine’s Western allies have supplied weapons to Kyiv and approved successive packages of sanctions against Russian interests in an attempt to reduce Moscow’s ability to finance the war effort.
On February 1, EU leaders reached an agreement on financial support for Ukraine in the amount of 50 billion euros.
