According to a report released this Wednesday by the Office of the Attorney General (PGR), thirty people died as a result of domestic violence last year, 22 of whom were murdered and eight who committed suicide after being killed.
The report on domestic violence homicides, citing cases that occurred in 2023, states that 22 people were killed, of whom 17 were women, three men and two girls.
The analysis, following monitoring and follow-up work carried out by the PIU Office of Families, Children, Youth and Elderly and Domestic Violence, shows that there will be eight more deaths by suicide in 2023. aggressor, which is “a continuous act connected with the murder committed.”
According to the GRR, the suicide rate corresponds to 36% of all cases.
The document states that the aggressors were mainly men (73%) of Portuguese nationality (91%) with an average age of 50 years, while the victims were predominantly women, also of Portuguese nationality and an average age of 54 years.
According to the analysis, murders occurred predominantly in family situations, with the victim and aggressor cohabiting in 18 of the 22 cases, and 14 children and young people present in a domestic violence context.
The PGR report highlights that in six murder cases (27%), the problem of domestic violence was already known to the formal justice system. From these six situations, 12 risk assessment forms were prepared and seven “medium” level ratings, three “low” level ratings and two “high” level ratings were obtained.
Among the risk factors present in the forms are previous physical violence, escalation of violence, addictive behavior (consumption), actual separation, psychological instability, fear of death and control.
Last year, deaths from domestic violence occurred in every month of the year except January, with the highest number of deaths recorded in June, with six in total.
According to the analysis, murders in the context of domestic violence were recorded last year in Lisbon (10), Porto (six), Coimbra (4) and Évora (2), with bladed weapons most often used in murders.
