Two humpback whales have been spotted having sex off the coast of Hawaii for the first time. What piqued the scientists’ curiosity, however, was that the two whales were males.
According to The keeperDespite decades of research on humpback whales, male penises have been rare and sexual intercourse has never been witnessed by humans.
The photos were taken in January 2022 in the waters west of Maui, Hawaii. Stephanie Stack, principal investigator for the Pacific Whale Foundation, worked closely with the photographers to evaluate and interpret what they saw. Now, a new study has been published that suggests that cetaceans such as humpback whales may use the genital slit or anus for sexual intercourse, to practice reproductive behavior, or to form a social alliance or assert some kind of dominance.
“This discovery challenges our preconceived notions about the behavior of humpback whales,” he said.
